This simple and elegant stair system was designed and crafted as part of the complete updating of a circa 1840’s stone farm house near Alma, KS. Physical lightness and transparency were critical issues to help minimize the mass of the stair in this compact stone house. Despite the difficult engineering challenges of being completely self supporting, the ‘L’ shaped stair made from laser cut steel fits flawlessly together, then disappears into the masonry walls.  Completely free of any fasteners, the stair stringers and walnut treads lock together through the use of carefully executed joinery that would have made the original farmers proud, even though we cheated and used motorized tools and computers instead of chisels and a pencil... well we did use a chisel and a pencil somewhere in the process.
